Summary

Social workers work with some of society’s most vulnerable people. They require a high level of motivation, commitment and a qualifying degree. The Open University’s Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship is approved by Social Work England, and successful completion entitles graduates to apply for registration as a social worker. Our Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship (SWDA) is a practice‐based learning programme that combines on and off‐the job learning and development, delivered flexibly around the demands of your workplace. You will develop new skills and knowledge whilst carrying out real work as part of a team in a social care setting.

The programme is suitable for new and existing social care support staff who are responsible for delivering direct services and who have the potential to take on greater challenges and responsibility as qualified social workers. It will support the development of social work trainees across a wide range of settings including services for adults, children and families, and mental health. The programme will also equip you to work with professionals from other organisations, such as the police, healthcare organisations, schools and probation services.

Qualifications achieved at the end of the programme:
  • BA (Hons) in Social Work (England)
  • Social Worker Degree Apprenticeship awarded by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE)
  • English and maths functional skills qualifications at Level 2, if not previously achieved

*Entry requirements include having evidence of achieving Level 2 or equivalent in English and maths - or completing these alongside the programme. See Full programme below for more information.

Please ensure that you download and read the full Module and Qualification Descriptor and Regulations prior to signing your registration agreement. Both documents must be read in conjunction with the Academic Regulations (Apprentices) which are available online via The Open University Student Policies and Regulations website.
